A magnetic base is a most useful accessory for a
dial indicator. Clams, or ?snugs ,?permit orienting the indicator at almost
any angle relative to the base. To reduce spring and flex in the
setup, all overhangs of the support rods should be kept to a
minimum.
Dial indicator are comparative instruments. While the distance
from the crank centerline to the block deck surface (the “deck
height? may be of interest, of arguably greater importance is its
uniformity from end to end and side to side. A fixed-length gauge
bar allows a dial indicator to gauge this variation.
