Dial calipers are similar to vernier calipers and can be used to make measurements to 0.001 inch also. The main advantage of the dial caliper is that it is easier to read than the vernier caliper.Inches and tenths of an inch are indicated on the main scale. Thousandths of an inch are indicated on the dial. To get a full reading, simply add the two together.
Most dial calipers are made so that the dial can be rotated for calibration. When using a dial caliper, always check to make sure the dial reads zero when the caliper jaws are closed.
